A record number of students at Carter High School have received full-ride scholarships to attend Texas Christian University. Six seniors at Carter were awarded the TCU Community Scholarships, each valued at more than $250,000, at a ceremony on Thursday. Tissues were passed out freely as the scholarship recipients, their families, classmates, teachers and staff cried in joy throughout the ceremony. It rained hard the night before, but nothing could dampen the enthusiasm surrounding a new learning garden at Dan D. Rogers Elementary. Nonprofit REAL School Gardens, along with corporate partners Texas Instruments, Fossil Group and FedEx, joined students, teachers and staff to install the new garden on Thursday, March 24. Principal Lisa Lovato said the garden will bring to life lessons in science, mathematics and engineering, possibly planting the seeds of future careers – even jobs that don’t yet exist. The staff at H.I. Holland P.R.E.P. Elementary at Lisbon is focused on students and helping them achieve. More than 300 students attend the school, which is part of the South Oak Cliff feeder pattern and has been at the heart of its community since 1938. Students at Ann Richards Middle School recently had the privilege of hearing from Angelo Baak, a refugee of the Sudanese Civil War. Baak told students about his struggles and how he survived the war as a teenager. The Sudanese Civil War lasted for 22 years and resulted the death of approximately 2 million people.
