As part of the Intensive Schools Network, Raúl Quintanilla, Sr. Middle School receives additional campus resources that it puts to great use. The school has multiple community partnerships that help students, teachers and parents. For example, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) President Domingo Garcia has donated incentives, including tablets to sixth-graders, to students who achieved academic excellence. Meanwhile, the Sylvan Learning Center provides foundational math skills to students, and Frost Bank provides financial literacy workshops to parents. Dallas ISD is encouraging qualified high school students to vote early in the March 1 primary election. Early voting locations are open from 7 a.m.- 7 p.m. through tomorrow. Friday, Feb. 26, is the last day for early voting in the primary election. Students can contact their school voting lead teacher to ask for an election guide that includes a list of all candidates on the ballot. Teacher leaders can also provide students with voter registration cards. At Saturday’s African American Read-In, it seemed that everywhere you looked you saw the event’s theme — Reading is the Wave of Life. Held at Cornerstone Baptist Church, the Read-In drew hundreds of parents and students to the Black History Month celebration that focused on culture, books and reading. After students filed in and picked up their souvenir shirts and badges, the event opened with a rousing performance by the Bandan Koro African Drum and Dance Ensemble. Students at Seagoville High School are poised to take education to the next level as plans are being made to launch the school’s Pathways to Technology (P-Tech) Early College High School in the fall, pending approval by the Texas Education Agency. The school will be the first of its kind in the state of Texas and will combine academic rigor with a career focus, giving students the opportunity to earn an industry-recognized associate degree while, simultaneously, completing high school requirements.
