Their eyes are closed as Mr. Gomez-Garcia leads his class with a breathing exercise. While there’s a focus on back to school during the month of August, it is also National Wellness Awareness Month. For nearly three years, some Dallas ISD students needing extra support in reading have been finding that support through the district’s Reading Interventionist Program. The results have been so promising that as this new school year begins, the program is expanding to nearly every elementary campus in the district. The program began in March 2021, with six elementary and four middle schools serving primarily African American campuses to provide equity in literacy and close learning gaps for students on those campuses. There are two words Dallas ISD teachers are excited about as they prepare this year’s lesson plans: “Amplify” and “Eureka.” Each is a lesson-planning program that maps out a base curriculum for students and teachers. All district campuses began using the programs on the first day of the 2023-2024 school year.
