The Dallas Independent School District began the 2014-2015 school year with a record number of filled teacher vacancies. Michael Latorre-Quevedo is one of the more than 900 teachers new to the area, among 2,000 teachers overall, hired in the district this school year. But just one year ago, Latorre-Quevedo could have been found helping shape the minds of students in Puerto Rico, where he has taught at both the elementary and secondary levels. The Dallas television market just gained a new voice with the launch of the School of Business and Management’s video broadcast venture, WSBM: The Face of Townview. The program was developed as a “sister team” to KSBM Radio: The Voice of Townview, which began broadcasting over the internet on the Fishbowl Radio Network last school year. On Aug. 28, state District Judge John Dietz ruled that the current Texas school funding system does not suitably, adequately or equitably provide the resources necessary to give all students a genuine opportunity to meet the state’s rising expectations. The ruling is significant for the Dallas Independent School District and other ISDs because it supports the belief that the state has significantly raised academic standards but its funding commitment does not match its expectations.
