The Dallas Independent School District is among six large school districts nationwide that will start rolling out the use of compostable round plates at cafeterias this month, saying good-bye to polystyrene trays. The new lunch trays will allow students to eat their food off of plates like they do at home, replacing the institutional rectangular lunch tray. As importantly, the new trays are produced from pre-consumer recycled newsprint and will be composted, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills. The North Dallas Advocate recently profiled the Junior League grants that go to teachers for projects not normally provided for in school budgets. The projects address subjects including reading and literacy enrichment; diversity; special education; science, technology, engineering and math (STEM); and arts and culture. Educating the 160,000 students in Dallas ISD requires nearly 12,000 teachers. The Human Capital Management department has been charged with placing an effective teacher in every classroom by the start of the 2015-2016 school year. Recently the students, parents, alumni and community members gathered to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Dallas ISD’s Stonewall Jackson Elementary School. The program was a retrospective of every decade since the school opened in 1939, performed by the students of Stonewall. Parents helped out with wardrobe, props, and hugs.  Several past principals were on hand to reminisce about the school’s long rich history.

Participants at the Dallas ISD Superintendent’s Scholarship Run – including honorary event chairman Tim Brown and Superintendent Mike Miles – talk about why they wanted to be a part of the first-year event. Proceeds from the run’s sponsorships and registrations of nearly 500 runners will benefit the Superintendent’s Scholarship Fund, which funds awards given to some of the district’s top graduating seniors each year.

Results from a recent districtwide survey show a notable increase in the percentage of campus-based employees who believe Dallas ISD is headed in the right direction. On the Spring 2015 Campus Climate Survey, the percentage of school staff believing that the district is moving in the right direction is now at more than a 2-1 margin. The response marks a 6.5 percentage point increase from the response to the same question in Fall 2013. Meanwhile, the Spring 2015 survey showed that 56.3 percent of staff said morale at their school has improved their year, an 6.3 percentage point increase from…
