On Sept. 22, Dallas ISD interim Superintendent Michael Hinojosa and Board President Eric Cowan spoke at the annual State of the District luncheon held by the Dallas Regional Chamber. As part of his speech, Hinojosa discussed the Dallas ISD’s culture of high expectations, and Cowan talked about the district’s effort to expand schools of choice. In an effort to fill bilingual teaching positions that can help meet students’ needs, Dallas ISD has recruited approximately 50 teachers from Spain. Marco Antonio Iglesias Rodriguez, a fourth-grade teacher at Herbert Marcus Elementary, is one of those teachers. Athlete and L.G. Pinkston High School senior Marquez Johnson is optimistic he’ll be admitted to his top college choice, Texas A&M College Station. He knows it offers his preferred major, electrical engineering, and he has even visited the campus. The African American Success Initiative (AASI) will highlight Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) through the “HBCU Experience” on Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 5:45–6:45 p.m. The event is being held at the S.T.E.A.M. Middle School at D.A. Hulcy, 9339 S Polk St. The AASI initiative is aligned with the Destination 2020 key action of educating students to become “college-ready” or “career-ready” by the time of graduation. On Aug. 21, Dallas ISD trustees voted to place a $1.6 billion bond program for Dallas ISD on the November ballot. The bond program is intended to provide new schools, facility improvements across the district, and support for growing programs. The Hub has compiled a guide to inform people regarding the bond proposal. What would the bond finance? The “Through the Lens of Jordan: Integrating Middle Eastern Narratives into North Texas Social Studies Curriculum” project will provide a once in a lifetime opportunity for up to 12 educators in the North Texas area. Organized by the University of North Texas, Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District and the World Affairs Council of Greater Dallas, and made possible through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, the project aims to give secondary educators increased knowledge and understanding of Middle East dynamics. Damien Gonzalez, an automotive student at W.H. Adamson High School, is standing in front of a Lamborghini Diablo, and he really wants the car. Gonzalez was one of about 45 automotive students from Adamson who went to a Mecum Auction held Sept. 17 at the Dallas Convention Center. The Dallas ISD students attended the auction thanks to donated tickets from Mecum Auctions, which bills itself as the world’s largest collector car auction.
