This year, as always, visitors to the State Fair have an almost overwhelming number of choices for food, entertainment and rides. From the time you enter the gates, everywhere you turn, there are whirling rides, music, livestock exhibits, gadgets, games and, of course, food — ranging from the fair favorite corn dog to prize-winning edibles such as deep fried cheeseburger baskets, milk chocolate bacon on a stick and beer-battered buffalo. Eric Hale, a third-grade math teacher at David G. Burnet Elementary, almost didn’t go through with the Distinguished Teacher Review process. Hale was originally excited about the DTR process, as he believed it would reveal his true effectiveness as a teacher. Plus, the opportunity for a DTR teacher to earn a $5,000 salary increase this school year wouldn’t hurt, either. Dallas ISD has earned the highest recognition of financial transparency—the “Platinum Level”— from the Texas Comptroller Leadership Circle. The Leadership Circle award recognizes local governments across Texas with a high standard for financial transparency. On Saturday, Sept. 26, alumni celebrated Sunset High School’s 90th anniversary with a commemorative program, refreshments, and plenty of conversations remembering how the high school was way back when. The ceremony also celebrated the school’s historic designation from the City of Dallas and State of Texas. “No matter if you were a class in the ‘40s, a class in the ‘60s, like me, or the kids today, we just have a bond that makes us family,” said Carol Brown, who graduated Sunset in ’67. “I’m glad to come back to Sunset and see that bond still exists.” Watch the above…

Students at James Madison High School enjoyed a surprise motivational speaker on Monday afternoon: Clifford Joseph Harris Jr., the Platinum-selling rapper and actor better known as T.I. On Sept. 26, at George H.W. Bush Elementary, Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities and DECA Dental Group kicked off a new partnership to provide underserved children in Dallas with free dental care. More than 300 third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade Bush students received a free dental screening in the school gym, which the group converted to a “dental lab” for the event. Dentists conducted the screenings, and the students can receive ongoing dental treatments at three DECA Dental locations over the next six months, free of charge.
