Graduation season kicked off yesterday, and there is plenty to celebrate about this senior class. For starters, Dallas ISD’s graduating class has received more than $104 million in college scholarships. The South Oak Cliff Feeder Pattern hosted their First Annual Elementary Robotics Competition on May 14. Seven of the eight elementary schools within the feeder pattern participated. The teams had to build a robot that was programmed to perform a specific function. The winner was the Longhorn Robotics Team from R.L. Thornton Elementary. The Dallas ISD STEM department contributed the robots and volunteers across the feeder pattern made the event possible.

Greenville Avenue Area Business Association (GAABA) merchants this week presented $15,000 in scholarships to nine seniors from North Dallas, Conrad and Woodrow Wilson high schools. Former GAABA president Jorge Levy, owner of Desperado’s Restaurant on Greenville Avenue, spoke proudly of the association’s decision seven years ago to fund student scholarships with proceeds from its two annual fundraisers. “To me, education is very, very important,” Levy said. “I barely finished high school, but because of economic problems, I couldn’t continue. What better way to get students excited about breakfast than to let them sell it to themselves? As part of National School Breakfast Week, Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services (FCNS) launched a school breakfast video contest with the directive to Eat. Record. Enjoy! Middle and high school students were invited to create a 30 second video encouraging their fellow students to take advantage of the healthy breakfast options offered on all Dallas ISD campuses. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), Senator Royce West, and Dallas ISD Board Trustee Joyce Foreman celebrated this week with Dallas’ first graduates of the ESA Digital Living Project, a program which teaches Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills to middle school students. Hundreds of seniors will take that much-anticipated final walk across the stage to receive diplomas this month. For many, the next big step will be leaving for college. Like virtually every high school senior, 18-year-old Landon Finley is looking forward to graduation. The South Oak Cliff student has won multiple scholarships, and has set his sights on attending Texas A&M University at College Station where he says his older brother, a former athlete and important role model, is in his second year and really loves the school and its rich traditions. The Dallas Environmental Science Academy has received a 2016 library grant from The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries.
