As part of National Teacher Appreciation Day, “The Real,” a nationally broadcast daytime talk show on Fox, featured Stephanie Dixson, a Dallas ISD kindergarten dual-language teacher at F.P. Caillet Elementary. The TV show’s hosts praised Dixson for being a “high-energy inspiration” for her students. On the second day of School Nutrition Week, leadership from the Dallas ISD Food and Child Nutrition Services Department visited Eduardo Mata Elementary School to present the cafeteria team with the Heart of Child Nutrition Award. The award celebrates cafeteria staff that go above and beyond to provide an exceptional food experience to students. “The cafeteria staff at Eduardo Mata are superb,” FCNS Area Supervisor Nate Hulford said. “They are hardworking and dedicated to the students. In celebration of National Teacher Appreciation Day, Brandon Hamilton from WFAA surprised two Dallas ISD teachers at their homes very, very early in the morning. At 5:24 a.m., Hamilton surprised Michael Ruiz, a Dallas ISD Teacher of the Year who works at W.B. Travis Vanguard for the Academically Talented and Gifted, at his home. Two years ago, Mayor Mike Rawlings started an effort in Dallas to combat the summer slide and give students a tangible pathway to a career. Nancy Bernardino, the principal of Dallas ISD’s Solar Preparatory School for Girls, was awarded the $20,000 Credit Union of Texas’ William H. Cotton scholarship. The scholarship honors William H. Cotton, a Dallas ISD and credit union trailblazer, and is open to all Dallas ISD employees who wish to pursue a post-baccalaureate degree or certification. Cotton retired as an associate superintendent for Dallas Independent School District and as a board officer for credit union of Texas. “Mr. C,” as he was affectionately known, began his career at Dallas ISD in 1957 as a teacher at Colonial Elementary School.
