More than 1,000 teacher candidates came to Conrad High School this past Saturday to meet with elementary, middle and high school principals in the hopes of joining Dallas ISD. Taylon Owens from Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy greeted elementary candidates in the morning. Conrad High School’s own robotics team, the #3005 Robochargers, spoke to elementary and secondary candidates about their experience at the Robotics World Championships just a few weeks ago where they placed second in their division. A few afternoon teacher prospects even got the chance to try and catch a ball tossed by the team’s practice robot.

Talley Dunn Gallery was the perfect setting to showcase some of the student artwork from Young Women’s Preparatory Network’s (YWPN) Respect Starts Here—Listen, Learn and Act (RSH) program on May 4. The two art exhibitions at the gallery coincidentally featured female artists: Natasha Bowdoin’s “Spelboken” and Linda Ridgway’s “With or Without.” Donors, supporters and students attended while enjoying light bites and beverages. News that Texas Ranger Cole Hamels’ foundation is donating $5,000 grants to a pair of district schools prompted surprise and elation from the two recipients at Tuesday’s presentation event. Adelfa Callejo Elementary counselor Tiffany Minor and Winnetka Elementary P.E. teacher Cassandra Benavides are still reeling from the news and hoopla surrounding the announcement that their schools are receiving the first local grants from Hamels’ Foundation. The pair met and thanked their benefactor Tuesday at a student assembly held at Winnetka to formally announce the grant presentations. Seven seniors from Sunset High School are expected to start well-paying, full-time jobs with the Dallas Sheriff’s Department after they graduate later this month. The students are already on their way to being trained as detention service officers, which start at $18 an hour, thanks to a program Sunset High School offers with the Dallas Sheriff’s Department. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Law Enforcement Preparation Program (LEPP) acquainted the students with the nature and complexity of law enforcement. The Siemens Foundation is encouraging high school students to pursue excellence and innovation in the areas of math, science and technology. By conceiving and executing a Siemens Competition Research Project students get valuable experience, and a chance at a scholarship of up to $100,000. Last month, a group of Arthur Kramer Elementary School fifth-graders continued an eight-year tradition by taking their annual trip to Sky Ranch, an outdoor educational camping site located in Van, Texas. Besides recreational activities such as campfires, a ropes course, zip lining, and learning about the life of a rancher, students also had a full-on science learning experience. Students engaged in multiple science and math activities throughout their three-day stay.
