Several assistant principals and campus instructional coaches from Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) schools met at Annie Webb Blanton Elementary to hold the first Transformation Academy. The purpose of the gathering was to study best practices in teaching and learning and to observe Master Principals. “Our goal is to empower assistant principals and principals to learn from transformational leaders so they can continue to carry forth the work and have great results for students,” said Jolee Healey, Executive Director of ACE schools. The robotics team at the Science and Engineering Magnet has helped convert an RV into a mobile tech lab! The students travel with the refurbished RV, known as the Mobile Tech XPerience, to teach robotics, 3D modeling and printing in underserved areas. The number of career certifications received by Dallas ISD students has increased by more than 3,500 percent since 2009–2010, and students like Damian, a senior at W.H. Adamson High School, are benefiting. Damian is in Adamson High School’s automotive technology program and plans to become a Porsche Master Technician. Meet Giovanni (“Gio”) Cischke, an eighth-grade student at Benjamin Franklin Middle School and a Boy Scout working on becoming an Eagle Scout. As Benjamin Franklin celebrates its 60th year and transitions into being an International Baccalaureate Program school, Cischke wanted to contribute something back to his school, its staff and his fellow students. For his Eagle Scout Project, Cischke decided he would paint his school’s six sets of entrance doors, all the exterior hand railings, and the information sign post. The Nick Cannon Foundation, in collaboration with Dallas ISD’s Career and Technical Education Program and JPMorgan Chase and Co., have announced the launch of a new competition for Dallas youth called “America’s Teen Mogul (ATM) Summit and Student Business Plan Competition.” Cannon announced the launch of the competition on Monday, Oct. 10, at Conrad High School. A Lincoln High School graduate has shot over adversity to become one of nine finalists for the NCAA 2016 Woman of the Year Award. Cameasha Turner graduated as the valedictorian at Lincoln in 2012 and went on to play basketball—and score a 4.0 GPA as a criminal justice major—at the University of Texas at El Paso. She is now in law school at Notre Dame. Turner has 11 siblings, and her dad has been incarcerated for most of her life. The answer to the question, “What’s in a name?” depends on who you’re asking. In the case of students at the newly named Piedmont G.L.O.B.A.L.  Academy, the answer is “a lot.” Students and community members in the Piedmont neighborhood in Pleasant Grove gathered at the former John B. Hood Middle School on Oct. 6 to celebrate the school’s new name and academic focus. The celebration was the culmination of more than six months of effort.
