Nearly 94 percent of schools in the Dallas Independent School District “Met Standard,” according to the Texas Education Agency’s (TEA) accountability ratings for the 2016-2017 school year. According to TEA data released this week, 218 of 233 eligible district campuses achieved the standard. The most significant progress in this year’s results was a reduction in the number of Improvement Required schools (IR), which fell from 21 schools in the previous year to 15, or 6 percent districtwide in the new rankings. However, accounting for the recent closure of George W. Carver Learning Center, the number of IR schools totals 14.…

Volunteering in Dallas ISD is a great way to make a difference and help students and schools thrive. Data shows a correlation between volunteers and higher student achievement, so the district highly encourages volunteerism. VOLY, the district’s volunteer management system, connects volunteers with students and schools where they can help. About 30,000 people registered last school year to volunteer through VOLY, and the district is looking to build on that success. Here are a few quick easy steps on how new and returning volunteers can register to volunteer.
Aside from school supplies, school uniforms are a primary need for many students going into the new school year. Families of students in preK–eighth grade in need of uniform assistance can contact their campus’ uniform coordinator for help in obtaining a uniform. Parents requesting uniform assistance must meet income eligibility guidelines and complete the Socioeconomic Information form to determine their eligibility. They also must fill out the Uniform Assistance Program application. Both forms are provided by their campus’ uniform coordinator and returned to that coordinator once they are completed. Qualifying families receive one uniform for each approved student. Dallas ISD’s Uniform Assistance…
No matter how you say “welcome” in their native tongue, staff at the Dallas Independent School District’s Margaret and Gilbert Herrera Student Intake Center always find a way of warmly welcoming new-to-the-country immigrant students to Dallas ISD. “The Student Intake Center plays a crucial role in providing an affectionate greeting to families new to the country and helping them acclimate academically and socially,” said Amanda Clymer, director of the Student Intake Center. “Our goal is to make families feel welcome and to empower them with information about Dallas ISD and community resources as they begin a new life in this…
Students from seven Dallas ISD schools received free uniforms thanks to the Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities and JCPenney at a special event on Wednesday, Aug. 9. A “pop-up shop” at Ellis Davis Field House provided a true shopping experience for students attending C.F. Carr, Jill Stone, Paul L. Dunbar, Elisha M. Pease, Charles Rice, Ronald E. McNair and J.W. Ray elementary schools. “This year’s back-to-school event is the largest ever,” Emmitt Smith said. “Which means we continue to collaborate with community partners and that our community partners continue to give above and beyond.” Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said that during…
“If you had an intro song when you walk into the classroom, what would it be?” For Ivan Medina, a new teacher at Gilbert Cuellar Sr. Elementary School, the answer is simple. “I’d play ‘La de la Mochila Azul,’ because a lot of my students are bilingual, and we could all relate to and connect with the song on the same level,” Medina said. Medina was one of about 1,000 new Dallas ISD teachers who came to Fair Park on Aug. 8 as part of New Teacher Academy. The event provided the new teachers with the information and resources they…
As Dallas ISD football programs welcome their student-athletes back onto the field, the district’s coaches and athletic training staff are working together to ensure student-athlete safety is a priority during the often soaring summer temperatures. Heat illness is the leading cause of preventable illness in high school athletics. And high-intensity outdoor sports during the summer months poses the greatest risk for these heat-related issues. The Dallas ISD Athletics department has placed licensed athletic trainers (LAT) at each of the district’s comprehensive high schools to monitor the health and safety of the district’s estimated 10,000 student-athletes. A $3 million proposal approved by the…
