District trustees were briefed Thursday on a recommendation to proceed with phase 2 of the district’s $1.6 billion 2015 bond program. At Thursday’s board briefing, Operations Chief Scott Layne recommended a list of 23 school renovation projects for phase 2 that he said are among the district’s most critical infrastructure needs. The list includes seven high schools receiving renovations required to meet state requirements for implementation of career and technical programs. The total budget for phase 2 projects, listed below with the recommended architects, is an estimated $275 million. The proposed list of architects reflects a 50 percent participation of minority…

Hollis Brashear, who served on the Dallas ISD board of trustees for 14 years, died on Sunday. Brashear served two terms as board president, and he previously had a 21-year career in the Army. There will be a wake for Brashear on Friday from 6:30–8 p.m. at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, 1808 W. Camp Wisdom Road.

Following a series of renovations at the Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship Academy (IDEA), 30 students are helping researchers discover how environmental changes impact their learning experience. IDEA, one of five Personalized Learning schools in the district, has transformed their building at James W. Fannin into a space that helps students adapt to the more open, collaborative environment they will find in college. “You can be yourself in the classrooms here,” said ninth-grade student Kerriyana Lawson. The Lone Star State School Counseling Association (LSSSCA) recently recognized 12 Dallas ISD schools for receiving the 2016 Lone Star State Award. On Tuesday, Jan. 24, LSSSCA recognized 37 schools around the state of Texas for implementing outstanding school counseling programs. Counselors in the selected schools exhibited excellence in advocacy, leadership, collaboration, and systemic change as supported by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model. The Rotary Club of Dallas is accepting teacher applications for its annual Service Above Self Awards through April 17th. The awards recognize teachers who strive to make a positive difference in the lives of others through demonstrated Service Above Self and who go above and beyond the call of duty.
