Aside from school supplies, school uniforms are a primary need for many students going into the new school year. Families of students in preK–eighth grade in need of uniform assistance can contact their campus’ uniform coordinator for help in obtaining a uniform. Parents requesting uniform assistance must meet income eligibility guidelines and complete the Socioeconomic Information form to determine their eligibility. They also must fill out the Uniform Assistance Program application. Both forms are provided by their campus’ uniform coordinator and returned to that coordinator once they are completed. Students from seven Dallas ISD schools received free uniforms thanks to the Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities and JCPenney at a special event on Wednesday, Aug. 9. A “pop-up shop” at Ellis Davis Field House provided a true shopping experience for students attending C.F. Carr, Jill Stone, Paul L. Dunbar, Elisha M. Pease, Charles Rice, Ronald E. McNair and J.W. As Dallas ISD football programs welcome their student-athletes back onto the field, the district’s coaches and athletic training staff are working together to ensure student-athlete safety is a priority during the often  soaring summer temperatures. Heat illness is the leading cause of preventable illness in high school athletics. And high-intensity outdoor sports during the summer months poses the greatest risk for these heat-related issues. Last week’s freshman orientation for Dallas ISD’s CityLab High School was no ordinary orientation, but then the school itself is beyond ordinary. Opening this fall, CityLab is Dallas ISD’s newest transformation school. The curriculum will focus on components of architecture, urban planning, environmental science and community development while taking advantage of its downtown setting to bring lessons to life. Nearly 3,800 Dallas ISD students are enrolled this upcoming school year in 23 collegiate academies and Early College High Schools (ECHS) where they can earn up to 60 hours of college credit or an associate degree—at no cost to them—while earning a high school diploma. Dallas ISD and the Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) operate the collegiate academies that have proven very successful. All 17 of the new collegiate academies received the Texas Education Agency (TEA) ECHS designation for the 2017-2018 school year. Elrod’s Cost Plus, Post and P&G have teamed up once again to help deserving Dallas ISD students start the new school year off right. From July 19–Aug. 31, shoppers can visit any Dallas Elrod’s Cost Plus to donate at checkout to the Dallas ISD Field Trip Fund. The suggested donation is $1, but all donations will be accepted. The fundraiser aims to support as many field trips as possible for Dallas ISD students. Last year the fundraiser drive raised enough to support 15 Dallas ISD schools.
