Cuatro escuelas de Dallas ISD se clasificaron para la competencia estatal de decatlón académico al obtener los mejores resultados en sus respectivas divisiones en la Region XII que se llevó a cabo el 19 y 20 de enero en Seagoville High School. Dallas ISD’s Benjamin Franklin Middle School celebrated the birthday of the inventor and statesman the school is named after on Jan. 17. Franklin, also considered one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was born on Jan. 17, 1706, in Boston. He died on April 17, 1790, at the age of 84. To celebrate, the school hosted keynote speaker Don Huffines, who represents District 16 in the Texas Senate. He encouraged the students to do their best, read often and never stop going to school. Dallas ISD is expanding opportunities for its students with the creation of Collegiate Academies inside most of the district’s comprehensive high schools. Academy students may earn up to 60 hours of college credit and an associate’s degree – tuition-free – while also earning their high school diplomas. Souper Bowl of Caring, a nonprofit dedicated to tackling hunger, kicked off its year-round initiative at Billy Earl Dade Middle School to help the more than 4 million Texans who face hunger. Teaming up with long-standing grocer partners, Albertsons, Kroger, Market Street and Tom Thumb, SBOC held its annual kick off at Dade Middle School on Thursday, Jan. 18. On Tuesday, Jan. 23, Mayor Mike Rawlings kicked off the 11th Dallas Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program by urging businesses and nonprofits to sign up to participate in the program. The eight-week paid summer internships are available to Dallas students, with the deadline to register coming fast on Jan. 31. The Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program introduces high school students to careers and employment opportunities in industries and companies where they have expressed interest. After being honored at a special reception on Jan. 17, Dallas ISD’s 2017-2018 Teachers of the Year were visited in their classrooms the next day by representatives from Central Market. This year’s top teachers are Josue Tamarez Torres, a fifth-grade math teacher at Annie Webb Blanton Elementary School; Beth Poquette Drews, who teaches mariachi, orchestra and guitar for grades 6-8 at L.V.
