A career educator from Wilmer-Hutchins High School has been inducted into the National Association of Negro Musicians’ Dallas Chapter Hall of Fame. Dr. Beverly Chinn has spent most of her career as a secondary choral educator at Title I schools, most recently at Wilmer-Hutchins. Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services (FCNS) ranked seventh among the 75 largest school districts in the country for participation in the district’s breakfast program. While the Winter Olympics play on TVs across the world, one Sunset High School student is staying busy in the gym training for a shot in the 2020 Summer Olympics. Stephen Acosta, a senior at Sunset, will compete in Poland in March for a chance to earn his spot on the USA Olympic team. The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees recognized students and staff for special achievements at its regular meeting on Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018. • Timothy Johnson, a senior at Skyline High School, was awarded 1st Chair – Tenor 1 – in the Texas All-State Mixed Choir, the which is the highest achievement a student in music can be awarded in the State of Texas. From the 14,000 students who started the audition process in September, he was among the 224 voices selected to the Texas All-State Mixed Choir. The Dallas ISD United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Workplace Campaign kicked off on Feb. 15. The campaign is an opportunity for district employees to donate to scholarships to help deserving Dallas ISD seniors of all races attend college. Dallas ISD campus employees can donate to the campaign by contacting their campus or department’s UNCF Representative. This year’s UNCF Workplace Campaign theme is Ready. Set. Harry Stone Montessori Academy celebrate the Chinese New Year with a fantastic performance from the Chua Phap Quang Lion Dance Team. The dance team performed traditional Chinese New Year music dances to the delight of students. Harry Stone, an International Baccalaureate World School, spent the entire week building up to the performance, with traditional decorations from the Chinese New Year covering the campus. The Prom Closet is open: Feb. 27–28 and March 1 from 4–8 p.m. March 3 from 9 a.m.–noon Students can pick out dresses sized 0 to 28, many of which have never been worn.
