The Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program gives Dallas ISD high school juniors and seniors real world experience in a professional field. North Texas shoppers have one more day to contribute to the Dallas Backpack Boosters campaign at area Kroger stores. The collection ends Tuesday, Aug. 1. There are two ways to help send school supplies to local students in need. Shoppers may donate $7, which pays for a pre-packaged Backpack Boosters school supply kit including pencils, markers, notebook paper and other classroom essentials. The Dallas Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program celebrated another huge year with a luncheon on Thursday that allowed the hundreds of participating Dallas public high school students to celebrate their hard work. This was the 10th year of the Dallas Mayor’s Intern Fellows Program. Demeatria LaForte is getting a new kitchen, but it won’t be in her home.  LaForte decided to swap a restaurant kitchen for a school cafeteria in the Dallas Independent School District. The Dallas ISD Class of 2017 has reported receiving nearly 5,730 scholarship or institutional grant offers totaling more than $211 million. Almost 4,000 students in the Class of 2017 reported applying for a scholarship or institutional grant. Superintendent Michael Hinojosa said the scholarship recipients and their families should be proud. “These scholarships are just the first dividends from the countless hours invested in pursuit of academic excellence, an investment that will continue to pay off far into the future,” Hinojosa said. The Dallas Independent School District will share a four-year grant with Big Thought, an educational nonprofit that coordinates out-of-school-time creative learning programs for Dallas students. Through the four-year Partnerships for Social and Emotional Learning Initiative, they will focus on implementing social and emotional learning (SEL) during in-school and out-of-school-time, helping children in Dallas develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to be successful in school, work and life.
