A two-sport letterman at Bryan Adams High School in football and track & field, Doug English was a standout defensive lineman for the Cougars. As a senior, a late growth spurt along with spectacular play on the gridiron caught the eye of the University of Texas coaching staff. Rudy Jaramillo has played a major role behind the scenes in the development and success for some of Major League Baseball’s (MLB) biggest stars and Hall of Famers throughout his coaching career. Jaramillo grew up in Oak Cliff and is a graduate of Sunset High School. After graduating from Sunset, he spent two years at Panola College before moving on to the University of Texas prior to the 1973 season. Summer time is around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to take a break and relax. This time of year is also the perfect time to enjoy fun-filled enrichment activities. Filling the summer with hands-on, enriching activities will not only keep students productively engaged, but will also help retain the academic learned during the school year. To help prevent summer loss, Dallas ISD is partnering with the city of Dallas, libraries and nonprofits throughout the city to offer hundreds of summer programs and enrichment opportunities for students of all ages. The Rotary Club of Dallas invites nominations from all district schools for its annual Service Above Self Teacher Awards. The award provides an opportunity to publicly applaud Dallas ISD teachers and to reward those who have demonstrated excellence in their profession by “going the extra mile.” Applications may be submitted by Dallas ISD teachers on their own behalf or by other individuals on behalf of a teacher. Dallas ISD students helped set a Guinness World Record title for the largest Artificial Intelligence programming lesson hosted by Capital One. The high school students enrolled in Dallas ISD NAF Academies joined students from other school districts and volunteers from Capital One and Major League Hacking on April 17 to learn the fundamentals of Python coding language. Michael Ensley is the chief architect of the Lincoln High School girls basketball dynasty of the late ’90s through the first decade of the new millennium. He led the Lady Tigers to a national championship, three state championships and eight state tournament appearances throughout his 14-year tenure as head coach from 1999-2012. Ensley arrived to Lincoln in 1998 and quickly set the standard future teams would have to live by. He led the Lady Tigers to an undefeated mark of 30-0 in 1999. Sixty-two graduating seniors in Dallas ISD’s Class of 2019 were recognized on Tuesday, April 16, with Superintendent’s Scholarships. Each honoree received $2,500 to go toward costs at the college or university of their choice. Selection for the Superintendent’s Scholarship Program is based on need, character, grades, recommendations and the promise of future success. The scholarships are funded with proceeds from the annual Superintendent’s Golf Tournament. A group of Sunset High School students have been invited to Washington D.C. next month to showcase an app they created to members of congress and the tech community. In 2018, more than 220 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives held a Congressional App Challenge. The Congressional App Challenge aims to engage students in computer science and spans 47 states and territories. Over four months, more than 5,000 students coded original apps as part of the district-wide competitions hosted by their members of congress. The office of Representative Marc A. Gary Blair currently serves as the head women’s basketball coach at Texas A&M University, where he has won a national championship, and is the most successful head coach in university history and a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
