In order to prepare students for the rigor of Advanced Placement coursework, Advanced Academic Services is sponsoring an AP Summer Boot Camp for any student enrolled in AP Biology, AP Calculus AB, AP English Language, and AP Human Geography for the 2019-2020 school year. The new L.G. Pinkston High School is a state-of-the-art facility that is planned to open in fall 2021. As plans develop for this highly anticipated facility, much interest has been generated. Dallas ISD early college namesake, Dr. Wright L. Lassiter Jr. passed away Monday, July 8, at his home in Dallas. Lassiter, 80, was a former president of El Centro College, chancellor of Dallas County Community College, and a longtime area minister and educator. A staunch supporter of higher education for inner city and minority students, Lassiter was instrumental in building early support for the creation of early college high schools in Dallas ISD. Shannon Trejo has been named deputy chief of Academics. Previously, Trejo had served as Dallas ISD’s assistant superintendent for Language, Literacy and Social Studies since October 2017. In that role, she led six departments—Dyslexia/504, Reading Language Arts, Social Studies, Dual Language and English Learner Services, World Languages, and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support—and focused on the creation and implementation of a districtwide curriculum. Silvia Salinas was recently named acting executive director of the Athletics Department, the first woman to occupy the position in Dallas ISD. A 27-year educator, Salinas has worked in athletics administration for 16 years. Continuing a long family tradition in education, Salinas earned a degree in exercise and sports science from Southwest Texas State University and a master’s degree in sports administration from Northwestern State University. She earned a doctorate in higher education and athletics administration from the University of North Texas. The 23rd-annual Mayor’s Back To School Fair will provide Dallas parents and children with everything they need for the first day of school.
