To stay competitive in the market and provide the support needed for students and campuses, Dallas ISD has increased the per diem rates for substitute teachers. The substitute compensation increases will not require the allocation of additional district funds and will be covered primarily by using the cost savings of the decreased fill rate for the first part of the 2019-2020 school year in the existing substitute budget allocations. Soon after being elected, Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson called Superintendent Michael Hinojosa with a request: the city needed help producing more police officers to serve the community. Hinojosa met with district leadership and came up with an idea: launch a new Criminal Justice Pathway as part of Bryan Adams High School’s P-TECH, where students can earn up to 60 hours of college credit tuition free while in high school. After a tornado impacted the Northwest Dallas community, a Dallas ISD teacher went door-to-door to local businesses seeking a helping hand. Jose Armendariz works as a bilingual kindergarten teacher at Pershing Elementary. His persistence resulted in a school supply donation worth more than $30,000. Pershing was among three schools that sustained damage and were temporarily relocated to Loos Field House. Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services Department will offer students free meals during the Thanksgiving break, from Nov. 25–Nov. 27, at select locations. The effort is to ensure students have access to nutritious meals even during breaks from school. Participating schools throughout the district will be serving morning snack from 9–9:30 a.m. and lunch from 12:30 p.m.–1 p.m. For a list of participating schools, go here. Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Dallas ISD Trustee Edwin Flores to the Texas School Safety Center Board. Flores will join seven other appointees on the board that reports to the governor, legislature, State Board of Education and Texas Education Agency regarding school safety and security. The board also advises the center on its function, budget and strategic planning initiatives. In addition to serving as a Dallas ISD trustee, Flores is the managing partner at Chalker Flores, LLP and is a member of the State Bar of Texas and United States Patent and Trademark Office.
