To celebrate International SEL Day on March 27, Dallas ISD’s Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Department is hosting a student contest to collect examples of what social and emotional learning means to them. Any K-12 Dallas ISD student is invited to enter the contest and use their favorite creative outlet to express their passion for social and emotional learning. After only winning one in-district game in the 2018 season, the Skyline High School Boys Baseball Team in 2019 made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years. Now as the 2020 season gets underway, the team is traveling to Corpus Christie this weekend to play against some of the state’s best baseball teams in the Mira’s Sports and More South Texas Baseball Classic. Through a partnership with entrepreneur and philanthropist Roland G. Parrish and the Dallas Urban Debate Alliance, four Dallas ISD students recently qualified for The Parrish Charitable Foundation’s Public Debate. The four students – selected from the top varsity speakers at the Parrish Charitable Foundation Tournament – will face off in a public debate in April. Eduardo Mata Montessori School celebrated reaching the halfway point of work on its new 30,000-square-foot school addition with a topping out ceremony. Imperial Construction, the general contractor for the $30 million Bond 2015 project, placed a piece of structural steel in front of the school for current students to sign. The beam was then hoisted into place as staff and students watched from a safe distance along the Katy Trail. As an industry partner with the South Oak Cliff High School P-TECH, PepsiCo and Frito-Lay are showing students great potential opportunities available to them after high school. PepsiCo and Frito-Lay have developed and implemented programming with the SOC P-TECH that covers careers, college, communication, leadership, collaboration, time management, public speaking, resumes and interviewing. PepsiCo and Frito-Lay have hosted college and career fairs where more than 150 associates mentored 300 students by sharing their college experiences. Students at W.W. Bushman Elementary School looked on in amazement as a dairy farm instructor demonstrated how to milk a cow. The activity was part of Dallas ISD’s celebration of National School Breakfast Week, which recognizes the importance of starting a day with a healthy meal. The dairy farmer also described how milk goes from the farm to consumer and answered a variety of questions from students.
