Ashley Marshall, manager of Dallas ISD’s Homeless Education program, sees her five-person team as a kind of “9-1-1- department.” On a day-to-day basis, the most important service the team provides is making sure homeless students get enrolled. The department also helps arrange transportation to school, provides uniforms as well as hygiene and school supplies, and makes referrals to additional resources for food, housing, counseling and medical services as needed. Elementary and high school debate workshops were held Saturday, Oct. 23, with 500 students in attendance. During the morning session, the topics for fifth graders preparing for their February debate tournament included Making the Case: Understanding the Act of Debating; Refutation: Understanding the Other Side; and Public Speaking, A Matter of Style and Presentation. The afternoon session included a live debate demonstration with Sudie Williams TAG student debaters. The sixth graders participated in the district’s fifth-grade debate program last year. Principal for a Day brought business and community leaders from the private sector into Dallas ISD schools on Wednesday, Oct. 27! About 200 volunteers accepted the opportunity to shadow Dallas ISD principals at 190 schools to gain an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the school district. Capital One Bank and the Dallas Regional Chamber again partnered with Dallas ISD for the annual event, which looks to form ongoing partnerships between individuals and businesses with Dallas ISD schools. Dallas ISD is one of the first districts in the DFW area to have average teacher salaries now exceed $64,000 under the Teacher Excellence Initiative! For comparison, $64,000 is equivalent to more than 20 years of service in the DFW market. As approved by trustees in June 2021, Dallas ISD committed to provide about $17 million in teacher salary increases this school year. While the COVID-19 pandemic required significant modifications to TEI last school year, returning teachers were eligible for a differentiated flat-rate increase ranging from $1,250 to $2,000.
