Dallas ISD District 5 Trustee Maxie Johnson today announced the renaming of Oliver W. Holmes Humanities Communications Academy to the John Lewis Social Justice Academy at O.W. Holmes, in honor of the late congressman and civil rights activist. As WFAA reports, a brand new school building is also in the works. A peaceful march led by Trustee Johnson, Holmes Principal Sharron Evans Jackson, and principals from surrounding schools began at 9:30 a.m. and concluded with a 10 a.m. press conference at the school. Last November, thanks to the generosity of the Laura Bush Foundation (LBF), the Dallas Education Foundation (DEF) was awarded $500,000 for the direct benefit of Dallas ISD to rebuild library collections of schools affected by the October 2019 Dallas-area tornadoes. These grants are being used to expand, update, and diversify the library book collections at Thomas Jefferson High School, Francisco “Pancho” Medrano Jr. High School, and Walnut Hill PK-8, with the goal to increase student interest in reading and directly tie book collection to instruction. Umphrey Lee Elementary students and staff put on their aprons, transformed their campus into the U Lee Pizzeria, and cooked up a whole day of interactive learning. Durante la reunión de noviembre, la Junta Escolar aprobó el nombre de Nolan Estes Plaza para el área que ocuparán varias escuelas en el centro de la ciudad en honor del reconocido educador quien fungió como superintendente del distrito durante 10 años. “Construiremos tres escuelas nuevas en las que los alumnos podrán estudiar desde prekínder hasta el doctorado en el centro de Dallas”, explicó el superintendente Michael Hinojosa.
