Last week, representatives from Dallas ISD, Amazon, and BootUp PD, joined by Texas Sen. Nathan Johnson, surprised four students with $40,000 scholarships during a celebratory computer skills-focused visit to Everette L. DeGolyer Elementary School.  Invited to DeGolyer as Computer Science High School Ambassadors, four high school seniors were surprised to be named Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship recipients. Each scholar will receive $40,000 over four years to pursue a computer science degree at a college of their choice and a paid internship offer at Amazon after their first year of college. Dallas ISD is receiving federal stimulus dollars known as ESSER funds to help the district recover from challenges caused by the pandemic and accelerate learning. One way Dallas ISD is using ESSER funds is to develop a depression screening tool called the PHQ9. Tracey Brown, executive director of Mental Health Services, is on a mission to make sure students who need mental health support as a result of the pandemic have access to it. During Dallas ISD Summer Breeze 2022, students will have two months to discover the excitement of summer learning. Thanks to the district’s free summer school program, students will have a chance to connect with their peers, partake in rigorous tasks, accelerate learning, and improve their social and emotional well-being In June, students can attend district-created summer learning programming at designated campuses.
