As recently as a few decades ago, Juneteenth resonated with relatively few people outside Texas and neighboring states. Named for the month June and the nineteenth day, Juneteenth commemorates the date in 1865 that Texas received word of the Emancipation Proclamation – two and a half years after the signing of the formal proclamation. Roosevelt High School alumni surprised 20 graduating seniors on Saturday, June 12, with a car caravan delivering gifts. Alumni decorated their cars and traveled from house to house to celebrate these Roosevelt Class of 2021 students. This is the second year for their Mustang Caravan of Love. The celebrations will continue this Friday, June 18, with a drive-thru celebrating Roosevelt graduates.

Walter Taylor III learned a lot about persistence over the last year. The senior at David W. Carter spent most days this school year with his eyes peeled on a computer screen attending class remotely from home. “I had to learn how to be a student,” he said of developing the discipline to consistently wake up, open the computer and motivate himself to do the required assignments to maintain a superior GPA. Thanks to a generous gift from Lyda Hill Philanthropies, Texas Women’s Foundation awarded a $40,000 grant to Young Women’s Steam Academy at Balch Springs Middle School and a $15,000 grant to Solar Preparatory School for Girls to increase usage of the IF/THEN Collection. The IF/THEN Collection is the world’s largest free resource of authentic and relatable photos, videos and biographies celebrating diverse, contemporary women in STEM careers and roles. The two Dallas ISD schools can use the IF/THEN® Collection for free for non-commercial purposes to highlight and elevate these STEM role models in order to inspire young girls to pursue STEM careers.
