Students who help maintain the Multiple Careers Magnet Center’s greenhouse garden will host their annual Spring Plant Sale, Wednesday, April 20 and Thursday, April 21. The Dallas Independent School District has been in partnership, now in its 20th year, with the Dallas County Master County Gardener Association, Inc. who helps run the magnet school’s garden. This year the plant sale will include herbs, perennials and vegetables to be sold. The gardener association will then donate all proceeds from the sale back to the garden. The Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Big “D” Band will host its annual Elegant Evening of Jazz, Saturday, April 16, as a gift to the community. The event will feature Townview’s award-winning Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensembles I and the Dean’s Latest Project (DLP) Combo. The jazz bands are under the direction of Dean Hill. An inspirational teacher and motivator, he has long fostered development of young musical talent within the Dallas community. Students from four Dallas ISD schools had a hand in piecing together a mosaic art sculpture to be on display in the Bishop Arts District. For their creative efforts, CW 33 featured the story as a Class Act segment. Schools that were represented in the art project were from: Sunset High School, W.H. Adamson High School, Booker T. With more than 67,000 Dallas ISD students speaking Spanish in their homes, the need for bilingual teachers and educators is great. Research has proven that teaching English Language Learners effectively means teaching them in both languages. However, with students entering the district at 4 years old, this means that pre-K (among other students) are having to learn both English and Spanish at the same time, something that often can hinder or hold a young child back.
