More than 800 coats and warm items have been donated to Dallas students by the Give A Kid A Coat organization spurred by the opportunity to serve others during the holidays. Mike Miles, superintendent for the Dallas Independent School District, weighs in on the perks of investing in summer math programs in an article posted by Education Week blog. A recent study by The RAND Corporation study, known as the National Summer Learning Project, provides data from the first summer of a six-year, randomized controlled trial of programs in Boston; Dallas; Duval County, Florida; Pittsburgh and Rochester, New York. Quentin Neroes, a senior at Emmett J. Conrad High School, is smiling a little wider these days. He has not only been accepted to Ivy League school Harvard University, but is the first non-magnet student in Dallas ISD to do so during early action decisions. Harvard is his third choice, for the soon-to-be first generation college student. He’s still awaiting acceptance from other top schools like Dartmouth College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Princeton University. Days shy of the Christmas holiday, a pair of parents spread a little holiday cheer and made a recent work day for one Dallas ISD crossing guard extra special. Nathaniel Kendrick tends to the Lakewood Elementary School crossing walk twice, daily. Manning his post, Kendrick never wavers from his number one priority: safely walking students across the street.
