Book donations from Ford, First Book drive home importance of literacy

Third-graders at Dallas ISD’s César Chávez Learning Center got to pick out a brand-new book of their very own on Wednesday, April 29.

They chose between Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends or Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul to add to their personal libraries.

The book donations are part of an effort by Ford Driving Dreams, Ford Motor Company Fund and North Texas Ford Dealers to donate 10,000 books to north Texas elementary school children in partnership with First Book, a nonprofit that provides books to low-income children. Principal Jose Muñoz said that families with students at the school are predominantly low-income and must use public transportation or walk to get where they need to go.

The Ford Driving Dreams Reading Party at Chávez featured guests who read to the students.

Gabriela Natale, host of the SuperLatina talk show, was on hand to read to students, along with La Grande 107.5-FM radio hosts Armando Ulloa (“El Chiquilin”) and Daniel Franco (“Chorizo”), as well as representatives from Ford and North Texas Ford Dealers.
