We recently caught up with Alberto Mercado who is a Senior Associate, North Texas Business Development Representative for Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN).

What high school did you graduate from and what year did you graduate?
W. T. White High School in 2009.
What are your responsibilities as a Senior Associate, North Texas Business Development Representative for LAN?
In my role at LAN, I lead the North Texas business development efforts in North Texas, with a particular emphasis on architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C). I serve as the key liaison for more than 40 public, private, and federal agency clients. My responsibilities encompass not only introducing new clients to our firm but also nurturing these relationships and identifying potential challenges. I am deeply involved in devising and executing strategies to broaden LAN’s business and service lines, ensuring we continually meet the evolving needs of our clients. I am instrumental in guiding the business and client synergy from concept to the completion of construction, ensuring the overall project and business objectives are achieved.
What are some career or personal highlights/accomplishments?
I am proud to have been the youngest person in the company’s 88-year history to be appointed as a Senior Associate with LAN. My leadership was further recognized when I was chosen to serve as the co-chair of the LAN corporate Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (ED&I) Steering Committee. In 2020, I was honored with the LAN Principle All-Star Award, and in 2023, I received the President’s Award from the American Public Works Association Texas – North Central Branch.
In addition to my professional accomplishments, I hold positions in various community and professional organizations. I am a Board member of the Regional Hispanic Contractors Association (RHCA), and the American Public Works Association (APWA) Texas– North Central Texas Branch. I also serve as a chair for the Community Service Committee for APWA.
On a personal level, I am proud to be a first-generation college student, graduating from the University of North Texas in 2014. I was also selected for the 2021 North Texas Commission’s leadership program to expand my leadership skills and learn best practices for regional stewardship.
In my personal life, I am blessed to be married to my high school sweetheart, Quinn Mercado. We are proud parents of our beautiful two-year-old daughter, Madeline.
What made your Dallas ISD education unique?
As a first-generation college student, my Dallas ISD education was instrumental in shaping my future. It instilled in me the value of hard work, the importance of community, and the belief that education can open doors to opportunities. These lessons have been the cornerstone of my career and community service.
Who was your favorite Dallas ISD teacher or what was your favorite course, and why?
My favorite teacher was Dr. Louis C. Glover, my physics teacher, and mentor at W.T. White. Dr. Glover was more than just a teacher; he was a guiding force who believed in my potential even when I didn’t. He pushed me to strive for more, to be a better student, and to never settle for mediocrity. His unwavering faith in me was a catalyst that sparked my passion for learning and connecting with people and organizations. This passion has been pivotal in my career in business development. Dr. Glover’s influence extended beyond the classroom, shaping me into the person I am today. Dr. Glover passed away in 2021. His teachings continue to guide me, and his memory serves as a constant reminder of the power of education and the impact a dedicated teacher can have on a student’s life.
What advice, if any, would you offer to students who are interested in your career field?
In the realm of business development, every interaction is an opportunity to learn, grow, and build connections. Embrace these opportunities wholeheartedly. Cultivate a network of diverse relationships, as they are the bedrock upon which successful careers are built.
Resilience is another crucial trait in this field. You will face challenges, but it’s your commitment to your goals that will carry you through. Failure is something we will all experience throughout our careers. However, failure provides the opportunity to gain valuable new knowledge that will produce success in the future.
Lastly, never underestimate the power of curiosity and continuous learning. Stay updated with industry trends, seek out professional development opportunities, and never stop expanding your knowledge. The world of business development is dynamic and ever-evolving. Your ability to adapt and grow with it will set you apart.
