Sixth graders represent and ‘tour the world’ at model U.N. conference

More than 600 sixth graders from 27 Dallas ISD middle schools participated recently in the Model United Nations conference. During the conference, held April 26th at the Ellis Davis Fieldhouse and sponsored by the Social Studies department, students represented different countries and presented resolutions on their global sustainable goals.

Students also enjoyed guest speaker Chris Gardner, the man behind the story from the motion picture, “Pursuit of Happyness.” They were able to ask Mr. Gardner questions as he encouraged students to be the one to make a difference.

The conference culminated with students “touring the world,” visiting exhibits representing different countries. They sampled food, examined artifacts, and learned about the history of each country. To commemorate their tour, students carried passports and received a unique stamp from each country they visited.

The purpose of the Model UN is to offer students an opportunity to gain substantive knowledge about the cultures and policies of countries around the world.
