Elementary students build confidence through ballroom dancing

Two elementary schools have danced their way into the ballroom dancing finals in Arlington later this month!

Dancing Classrooms is a 20-lesson ballroom dancing program that was open to elementary schools. The ballroom dancing Colors of the Rainbow Semi-Finals saw fifth-graders from seven Dallas ISD elementary schools compete: Brashear, DeGoyler, Dunbar, Foster, Harry Stone, Holland, and Zaragosa elementary schools.

Brashear and DeGoyler advanced out of the semifinals to compete in the finals later this month

“The purpose of the Dancing Classrooms program is to build social awareness, confidence, and self-esteem through social dance,” said Barbara Johnson, Director of Health and Physical Education Department. “Dancing classrooms not only teach students how to ballroom dance, but they also gain social skills while getting some exercise that feels more like fun.”

The Colors of the Rainbow Semi-Finals event extended the journey and encouraged the schools to become even more of a community through sending a team to participate in the competition.

“This is about more than the dance skills, but also about classroom behavior, discipline and overall attitude,” Johnson said. “Being a part of the team is a great opportunity for those students who may best benefit from the experience.”

The finals are scheduled for Tuesday, May 16, at 6 p.m. at the University of Texas in Arlington.
