Dallas ISD will offer high school juniors and seniors and their parents a helping hand navigating the path to college at the district’s annual college fair set for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wed., Sept. 21, 2016, at the Ellis Davis Field House, 9191 Polk St.

The fair will feature representatives of more than 200 colleges, universities, trade schools and the military sharing information and answering questions about available careers and how to choose, get admitted to, and pay for college.

The college fair theme is “Take the next step toward your future.” It’s one strategy Dallas ISD is pursuing to encourage more students to apply for and enter college, which is one of the district’s six student achievement goals. Parents are encouraged to attend with their students to get help navigating what can be a confusing and complicated process, especially for families working to get that first child into college. In addition to the exhibits, the event will feature:

  • On-site scholarship awards by the Infinite Scholars Program, which provides mentor and financial support to minority students;
  • Performers and speakers highlighting the benefits of historically black colleges and universities;
  • Children’s Health is offering college-required Meningitis vaccinations free of charge, and Albertson’s Pharmacy will be on site to administer 250 free flu shots for students while they last;
  • Information and presentations to help parents get more engaged in their children’s education;
  • Support to promote career and college readiness, including help completing financial aid applications and registering for SAT and ACT;

To assure adequate preparations are made to accommodate families, students are asked to sign up with high school counselors by Wed., Sept. 14.

The college fair is free and open to all district juniors and seniors, and free transportation is available from high school campuses. Informational flyers are available here, and questions about the event may be directed to Dallas ISD Counseling Services at (972) 925-3505.
