Spruce High School welcomes Class of 2020 with a ‘Vision of Graduation’

More than 125 incoming H. Grady Spruce High School freshmen got their first taste of Timberwolf spirit at the school’s ‘Fish Camp’ held on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

More than a dozen local organizations including CiCi’s Pizza and the Southeast Dallas Chamber of Commerce joined the beginning of year momentum by providing pizza and Class of 2020 t-shirts for every incoming freshman, complete with a design by Robert Cooper, Spruce art teacher.

Spruce staff and community welcomed the ninth-graders with open arms and immediately ushered them into the auditorium. There, a pep rally kicked off the half day of rotating sessions, which included a dress code fashion show, upperclassmen panel discussion, counselor’s corner, club/organization fair an campus tour.

Keyonte Brown, who’s coming to Spruce form Balch Springs Middle School, said Fish Camp was not what he expected and enjoyed the obstacle course station the most.

“The dancing, the pictures – it was different!” he said.

Brown said the day definitely prepared him to start school on Aug. 22.

“I know what’s going on and what to do – like how to get to class on time and how many credits I need,” he said.

Principal Danielle Petters and her staff are excited about the recent jump in the school’s graduation rate – 86 percent in 2015 to 92 percent in 2016 – and look forward to accomplishing even more this year. She hopes a strong freshman orientation will help set the tone for a clear, “20/20” vision of success.
