It’s been months of intense planning, development and incubation for eight teams working to establish Personalized Learning (PL) models throughout Dallas ISD. Now that hard work will soon come to fruition. The cohort teams presented PL plans last week to a panel of Dallas ISD senior leadership. Following a rigorous vetting process, the Office of Transformation and Innovation announced today that five of the eight teams were selected to move forward with implementation and will launch their plans next fall. Quentin Neroes, a senior at Emmett J. Conrad High School, is smiling a little wider these days. He has not only been accepted to Ivy League school Harvard University, but is the first non-magnet student in Dallas ISD to do so during early action decisions. Harvard is his third choice, for the soon-to-be first generation college student. He’s still awaiting acceptance from other top schools like Dartmouth College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Princeton University. Days shy of the Christmas holiday, a pair of parents spread a little holiday cheer and made a recent work day for one Dallas ISD crossing guard extra special. Nathaniel Kendrick tends to the Lakewood Elementary School crossing walk twice, daily. Manning his post, Kendrick never wavers from his number one priority: safely walking students across the street. Recently his finances had not been enough to pay for some basic necessities, like having adequate transportation, and his car was repossessed. This year, Dallas ISD Connect Contact Center staff shared a little bit of holiday spirit by greeting families, helping with purchases and customer service at the Treasure of Hope, an annual shopping effort that allows families in need to shop for merchandise at 75 percent off retail value. Treasure of Hope provides selected families a $40 credit to spend in their holiday store. The effort supported by the Dallas Leadership Foundation includes a donation of toys and money from more than 20 churches and community- and faith-based organizations and serves 400-500 families and 1,500 children through the work of more…
