School starts on Monday, which, of course, also means that school zones will be in effect for motorists. The total fine for speeding in a school zone starts at $221. Also, all drivers are still prohibited from texting or using handheld cell phones while driving in a school zone. Drivers are encouraged to observe speed zones when flashing light signals are active, and to be aware of students walking near schools.

Dallas ISD’s summer graduation is happening Tuesday, Aug. 9, and the event will see about 320 students will get their diplomas. The ceremony is scheduled for Jesse Owens Memorial Complex at the Ellis Davis Field House, 9191 S. Polk St., at 7 p.m.

Eight Dallas Independent School District campuses are among 500 high schools nationwide honored by Newsweek for preparing students at an economic disadvantage for college. According to the magazine, Newsweek “evaluates schools on a broad range of criteria in order to identify schools that excel at preparing students for college and overcome the obstacles posed by socioeconomic inequality.” The following Dallas ISD campuses were recognized for “Beating The Odds,” along with their respective rankings: School of Science and Engineering – No. 5 Irma L.
