Skyline High School’s Marcus Garrett has been named the 2016-2017 Gatorade Texas Boys Basketball Player of the Year! The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Garrett as the best high school boys basketball player in Texas. “I am humbled and honored to receive this award, and I have my coach and teammates to thank,” Garrett said. The African American Success Initiative partnered with Southern Methodist University Athletics and Physics Department to provide an exciting STEM experience to students. Over 25 schools were invited to participate and approximately 1,000 Dallas ISD elementary and middle school students had the opportunity to see an exciting women’s basketball game between SMU and Texas State. In preparation for the event, students were encouraged to create their own fun STEM related posters to encourage the women’s basketball team to win; SMU won the game! It’s not up for argument: the Skyline High School mock trial team is really good. Skyline took second place in the Texas High School Mock Trial Competition held earlier this month. Skyline was one of four Dallas ISD teams that advanced out of the Dallas Regional Mock Trial competition to participate in the state competition. Hillcrest High School, Woodrow Wilson High School, and the Judge Barefoot Sanders Law Magnet also had mock trial teams advance to the state competition. The Dallas Bar and Dallas ISD Social Studies Department sponsor the Mock Trial Program.
The National Junior Honor Society has returned to Boude Storey Middle School, and Fox 4 has the full story. English teacher Felicia Daniels brought the school chapter of the National Junior Honor Society back to the school at a recent ceremony. Teachers believe the school chapter closed about 10 years ago. At the ceremony celebrating the return of the National Junior Honor Scoiety, Fox 4 Reporter Shaun Rabb served as the keynote speaker. Go here to see the full story from Fox 4.
