Big Tex wrote some more big checks for students: A total of 85 graduating seniors from six Dallas ISD high schools received more than $500,000 in college scholarships from the State Fair of Texas. The State Fair of Texas Pete Schenkel Scholarship awards outstanding seniors from six Dallas ISD high schools surrounding the State Fair of Texas. The students each received $6,000 scholarships in recognition of their academic performance and class ranking. Senior classmates Valeria Delacruz and Vanessa Guel Guerrero are heading down different paths after they graduate from Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School , but they share a mutual admiration for each other’s journey. Gilbert Cuellar, Sr. Elementary School teacher Ruth Torres has been selected for the prestigious LiftOff Summer Institute to be held at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston this summer. This nationally competitive program sponsored by NASA’s Texas Space Grant Consortium selects teachers who will increase their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and math through space education. More than 200 students at Frederick Douglass Elementary School were deputized as Junior Fire Marshals and got a hands-on fire safety lesson exploring a mobile fire simulation house.
