Fifth-graders at Joseph J. Rhoads Learning Center heard from members of the National Guard as they spread the message and importance of staying in school and away from drugs during Operation Crackdown on Friday, Sept. 12. Students were bused to the 3200 block of Trezevant Street, where they witnessed the demolition of a drug house.

Freshmen at Thomas Jefferson High School were still in diapers on Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists aboard hijacked planes created the tragedy we know as 9/11. On the 13th anniversary of the tragedy, their Senior Army Instructor, LTC Frederick Holland led students in a remembrance of the attacks in an assembly that also featured a West Point recruiter who talked with students about the benefits of an education at the U.S. Military Academy. Eleven district schools were recognized by the O’Donnell Foundation and Texas Instruments for meeting 2014 AP goals set by the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) in AP English, AP math and AP science. The schools were recognized recently at the districtwide AP Kickoff conducted at Emmett J. Conrad High School to celebrate the accomplishments of the AP program and honor the students, teachers and campuses for making strides in the area of advanced placement.
