Harry Stone and Rangel roll to the top in Pentathlon

Students at Harry Stone Montessori Academy took top honors as the best overall team at the district’s Seventh-Grade Academic Pentathlon competition held Feb. 7. Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School placed first in the eighth-grade level competition. Seventh- and eighth-grade students from 16 district middle schools spent the day competing, individually, in five subjects: Literature, Math, Science, Social Science, and Fine Arts. The competition culminated with the Super Quiz where students from each school compete as a team. The individual and team scores are added together to determine each schools’ overall performance. “We must infuse our thoughts with love,” urged Etana King, winner of the 2015 Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition. Etana, a fifth-grade student at John Neely Bryan Elementary, was crowned the top orator after delivering an inspirational speech sharing her thoughts on what Martin Luther King Jr. would say in his acceptance speech if he were alive today and won the Nobel Peace Prize. “We must not use our arms to take up weapons that harm and destroy; instead we must use them to embrace our differences,” she continued.
