Superintendent and trustees pledge action in response to demographic report
0Superintendent Michael Hinojosa and trustees said a demographic report showing a slight student enrollment decrease this year is a call to action to determine ways to bring families back to the district. The student enrollment in 2015–16 is 158,692, which is down from the 2014–15 student enrollment of 160,253. The largest enrollment drop—approximately 1,000 students—came on the kindergarten level. 0When Withers Elementary reopened in the ’90s, the Dallas ISD school struggled to compete with the numerous private schools in the surrounding area. The North Dallas school continually battled low enrollment until a group of parents had an idea in the early 2000s: the school could start a two-way immersion dual-language program that would put Spanish-speaking and English-speaking students in the same classroom, teach them the same curriculum in both languages, and create bilingual, bicultural and biliterate students.
