Early voting starts May 30 for District 2 trustee runoff election
0Early voting starts May 30 for the runoff election for the District 2 trustee seat. Trustee Dustin Marshall and Lori Kirkpatrick are in the runoff for the seat that covers North and Near East Dallas. Neither candidate received at least 50 percent of the vote on May 6. Early voting is May 30–June 6. Election day is June 10. Go here to see polling locations for early voting and election day.
Model UN allows students to tackle global challenges (video)
0The annual Model United Nations conference brought together about 400 sixth-graders from 13 Dallas ISD campuses earlier this month at Ellis Davis Field House. Students conducted research on world cultures and also global issues beforehand so that they could serve as delegates from UN countries. Students focused on solutions to 10 issues relating to sustainability, including education, gender equality and health. The annual event is coordinated by the Dallas ISD Social Studies Department.
Sunset High School wins State Championship for robotics
0The Sunset High School robotics team won the 2017 UIL Robotics State Championships in Conference 5A-6A of the First Tech Challenge Division! The UIL Robotics State Championships were held May 19-20 at the Austin Convention Center. The Sunset team members are Karen Garcia, Valerie Alvarez, Maria Diaz, Jennifer Servilla, Samantha Morales, Ana Palomares, Ivan Martinez, Nick Moncada, Jesse Estudillo, Allan Cruz and Alexander Alonzo. Substitute teachers set up for success, have big impact on the classroom
0After attending the Dallas ISD daylong orientation for new substitute teachers, Cynthia McMillian, who has worked as a substitute all year at W.T. White High School, said she was ready to succeed in the classroom. Dallas ISD revamped its substitute teacher orientation this year to notably positive results. The orientation partners with different Dallas ISD departments so incoming substitute teachers are informed on everything from de-escalation techniques to best teaching practices. And since Dallas ISD has about 800–900 substitute teachers working across the district on a given day, preparing these teachers for success in the classroom has a big impact…
