0Eight elementary school students participated in the finals of the 29th Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Oratory Competition, which took place in W.H. Adamson High School on Jan. 15. The law firm Foley & Lardner partners every year with Dallas ISD to organize this districtwide competition. Michael Newman, managing partner of the law firm’s Dallas office, has helped as a judge and organizer for over five years. High School Choice Awareness Week will connect current eighth graders with a best fit high school
0As part of High School Choice Awareness Week happening Jan. 19–22, all current eighth graders will learn about potential best-fit high schools based on their interests and future career aspirations. High School Choice Awareness Week builds on the great guidance lessons that counselors have already been doing with students. The first day of High School Choice Awareness Week will see students complete a Find Your Path assessment, which provides suggested careers and college majors based on their personality, and a Would You Rather survey, which matches a student’s hobbies with possible future careers. Dallas ISD Home Visitation Program Expands to Several Schools with Predominantly Black Student Populations
0In an effort to build trusting relationships with families and learn if there are any specific barriers they can help students overcome, Dallas ISD has expanded its home visitation program to serve five additional schools with predominantly Black student populations. Through the Home2Home Visit Initiative, select teachers from Birdie Alexander Elementary School, and Boude Storey, Kennedy-Curry, O. W. Holmes and Zumwalt middle schools are now conducting virtual home visits with parents that opt in the program.
