0Dallas ISD will build on the success as the highest achieving urban district in Texas for English learners by upgrading its dual language program. As part of “Dual Language 2.0,” the district will transition from teaching math in English and science and social studies in Spanish to teaching all three subjects in both English and Spanish. “Recent studies show that teaching math, science and social studies in both English and Spanish closes the gap for students in English much sooner and will give these students a lift,” said Richard Heffernan, executive director of the Bilingual ESL department. 0Dallas ISD’s innovative choice schools and programs are bringing students back home to the district. Over the past three years, 2,296 students left a charter, private or other school to attend a Dallas ISD transformation school or P-TECH. 0Even with the learning challenges caused by the pandemic, data shows that students who attend Dallas ISD pre-K outperform students who do not attend district pre-K. The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted student learning across the board this school year. However, data shows that kindergarten students who attended district pre-k last year are now scoring higher in reading and vocabulary assessments than students who didn’t attend pre-K.
