Families and community members celebrated literacy and literature at the African American Read-In on Saturday, Feb. 21, at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Dallas. Attendees included Dallas ISD District 9 Trustee Bernadette Nutall, City of Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and District 3 Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price. The importance of reading was advocated to young students through poetry readings, storytelling and musical performances from Dallas ISD schools, including Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and Lincoln High School.

Just in time for the 2015 tax season, students in Woodrow Wilson’s Academy of Finance have received IRS certification to assist with tax return preparation. Woodrow is one of only three schools in the state with students named certified IRS approved agents. This means they have Internal Revenue Service permission to complete and electronically file IRS tax returns free of charge through VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. Starting Jan. 24, the students will set appointments to complete the 1040EZ and 1040 tax forms of taxpayers who sign up for filing assistance. The time students spend performing tax services…

The first-ever Extra Mile for Teachers Summit on Saturday, Jan. 10, was coordinated by the College Football Playoff National Championship Foundation, coming days before the first college championship game at AT&T Stadium. Skyline High School hosted hundreds of students, teachers, administrators and campus coaches from across the Dallas Independent School District on Jan. 31, for STEM Day 2015. The event was a mix of fun demonstrations, learning opportunities and hands-on engagement designed to emphasize the importance of science, mathematics and engineering.
