More than 85 percent of this year’s Distinguished Teacher Review-eligible teachers said they had a positive experience with the district’s new initiative that helps identify effective teachers. The feedback was in response to a survey that Dallas ISD issued to DTR-eligible teachers to get their thoughts on the DTR process. Dallas ISD implemented the DTR process this school year as a part of the Teacher Excellence Initiative (TEI), which aims to identify and reward effective teachers. In just four short years since coming to America and learning the English language, Alfredo Ramirez has achieved academic success. Ramirez is a recipient of the Superintendent’s Scholarship and the coveted Sulentic Family Scholarship.  He is a member of the Academy of Engineering and the Robotics Organization at Hillcrest High School. An accomplished musician, Ramirez plays multiple instruments. He is also the co-director of music for the children’s choir at his church. In order to increase the number of the Dallas ISD university and expert partnerships, the STEM Mathematics Department has partnered with Carnegie Learning to provide professional learning opportunities to summer school campus leadership staff in the areas of academic rigor, high cognitive tasks, and effective lesson planning. Carnegie Learning is a provider of math curricula for grades 6–12. The professional development opportunity is scheduled for May 21 and June 9 at D. A. Hulcy Middle School. Second-graders visiting the library at Stevens Park Elementary School one morning this week sounded quite disappointed that they were allowed to check out a book only one more time before the school year ends. Their attitude is a testament to librarian Jennifer House, who has been named Dallas ISD’s 2015 Librarian of the Year. The bright, well-organized space welcomes students to explore. Stuffed animals on many of the bookshelves are three-dimensional depictions of book characters, beckoning students to take closer looks at the words that bring them to life. As Dallas ISD continues to redefine teacher evaluation, one of the most talked-about pieces of the Teacher Excellence Initiative is the student-perception surveys. Students took grade-level and age-appropriate surveys to determine what they found were the most-effective qualities of their teachers.
