The Dallas ISD Board of Trustees discussed a plan on Thursday that could consolidate approximately 400 district employees currently spread across eight locations, some of which are in dilapidated conditions, into one building. The board is expected to vote on the proposal on May 28. Dallas ISD is proposing a $1.3 billion budget for the 2015-2016 school year that would increase teacher salaries on average by $2,300, provide a 3 percent raise for non-teaching staff, continue to implement several new initiatives and keep the tax rate the same. District officials presented the proposed budget to the Dallas ISD Board of Trustees during a workshop on Thursday, May 14. More than 85 percent of this year’s Distinguished Teacher Review-eligible teachers said they had a positive experience with the district’s new initiative that helps identify effective teachers. The feedback was in response to a survey that Dallas ISD issued to DTR-eligible teachers to get their thoughts on the DTR process. Dallas ISD implemented the DTR process this school year as a part of the Teacher Excellence Initiative (TEI), which aims to identify and reward effective teachers. In just four short years since coming to America and learning the English language, Alfredo Ramirez has achieved academic success. Ramirez is a recipient of the Superintendent’s Scholarship and the coveted Sulentic Family Scholarship. He is a member of the Academy of Engineering and the Robotics Organization at Hillcrest High School. An accomplished musician, Ramirez plays multiple instruments. He is also the co-director of music for the children’s choir at his church. He plans to attend Texas A&M University to study biomedical engineering. In order to increase the number of the Dallas ISD university and expert partnerships, the STEM Mathematics Department has partnered with Carnegie Learning to provide professional learning opportunities to summer school campus leadership staff in the areas of academic rigor, high cognitive tasks, and effective lesson planning. Carnegie Learning is a provider of math curricula for grades 6–12. The professional development opportunity is scheduled for May 21 and June 9 at D. A. Hulcy Middle School.
