With a new school year on the horizon, Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services has been hard at work to find new ways to help fuel student success by offering breakfast, lunch and in some cases dinner at district schools. For the third year, Dallas ISD will provide school meals at no charge to all district students. Families are not required to complete the free or reduce lunch application to receive free meals. The Dallas Mayor’s Intern program celebrated its biggest year yet with a luncheon on Thursday that allowed the hundreds of participating Dallas public high school students to celebrate their hard work. As Mayor Mike Rawlings took the stage at the Omni Hotel, he congratulated the 350 student interns for helping improve the city. Rawlings commended the students for their aspirations and communication skills that helped them stand out from the more than 1,000 students who applied to the program. Stephanie Elizalde, a proven schools leader in the Dallas Independent School District and throughout Texas, has been named the district’s Deputy Chief of School Leadership. In just three days, many students at the inaugural Cheer Camp held at Billy Earl Dade Middle School went from never cheerleading at all to performing a detailed routine that involved dancing, cheers, and throwing a fellow cheerleader in the air before safely catching them. Vonda Pipkin and Brittney Scott, two Distinguished Teacher Review-eligible teachers who voluntarily transferred to Dade Middle School as part of the district’s Accelerating Campus Excellence Initiative, started the cheer camp as a way to promote team building and leadership skills. El Centro College’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center and Dallas ISD have signed an agreement to work together to foster students in STEM engagement.
