Dallas ISD now has an alum in the NFL Hall of Fame. Tim Brown, the retired NFL great and Heisman Trophy winner who graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, was inducted into the Hall of Fame on Saturday in Ohio. Seniors who have completed the requirements for graduation this summer will have their moment of pomp and circumstance on Thursday, Aug. 13. Commencement exercises for seniors from all district high schools are scheduled at 6 p.m. Thursday at Ellis Davis Field House, 9191 S. Polk St. Graduating seniors are encouraged to participate in the commencement rehearsal set from 10 a.m.–noon, Wednesday, Aug. 12, also at Ellis Davis Field House. Starting Aug. 11, almost all Dallas ISD new and returning students can be enrolled in school online. By utilizing online enrollment, parents don’t have to wait in lines to fill out paper forms at the campus to enroll their child. “Additionally, online enrollment helps Dallas ISD reduce paper waste, while creating a convenient, fast, and accurate online enrollment experience at your fingertips,” the online enrollment stats. Parents are encouraged to resolve student immunizations as early as possible to avoid the inevitable back-to-school rush in clinics, doctor’s offices and medical facilities throughout the city. Students enrolling in Dallas ISD for the first time must provide evidence of required immunizations.

New Dallas ISD teacher Samuel Cross is looking forward to teaching choir at T.W. Browne Middle School. Cross was one of approximately 1,600 new teachers that attended a New Teacher Academy orientation event at Fair Park to learn about the district. Cross said he’s pumped and ready to start the 2015 school year. “I’m excited about inspiring students to achieve their goals in life and in music,” he said. More than 245 Dallas ISD teachers applied for the opportunity to attend a district-funded training at the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education at Southern Methodist University. Dallas ISD paid $3,000 per teacher for teachers to attend this three week-long intensive training at SMU’s Simmons School of Education. Approximately 97 percent of all Dallas Independent School District campuses met state standards for student progress and 89 percent of schools achieved requirements for college and career readiness, according to data released today by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). In all four categories—student achievement, student progress, closing performance gaps and postsecondary readiness—Dallas ISD outperformed thresholds set by the state. Overall, 190 of 227 (84 percent) Dallas ISD campuses met state standards, up from 184 the previous year.
