WFAA 8 profiled the changes happening at Zumwalt Middle School as part of the Accelerating Campus Excellence (ACE) initiative, which aims to boost student achievement by staffing identified schools with high-performing principals and teachers. The wind blowing through downtown Dallas on Wednesday, Nov. 11, didn’t slow down the hundreds of students participating in the 2015 Dallas Veterans Day Parade. This year’s theme was “Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the End of World War II.” Seven World War II veterans were selected to serve as Grand Marshals. High schools from across the district were represented with JROTC units, marching bands, drill teams and cheerleading squads. See additional photos of the parade here.

The small circular table appears like an island in a sea of books and literary materials in the library at Sarah Zumwalt Middle School. Its purpose is simple: to honor those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Officials from the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Ford Motor Company, City of Dallas and Dallas ISD helped celebrate Tim Brown Day on Friday, Nov. 6, with three events throughout the day. Brown won the Heisman Trophy while playing football at Notre Dame University, and went on to have a distinguished career for the Los Angeles Raiders in the NFL. Mike Morath, a Dallas Independent School District trustee, has been appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott as the chairperson of the newly created Texas Commission on Next Generation Assessments and Accountability. As outlined in House Bill 2804, the commission will develop and making recommendations for new student assessment systems and public school accountability no later than Sept. 1, 2016. Morath, the Trustee for District 2, is one of 10 individuals appointed to serve on the commission. Morath is chairman of Morath Investments.
