Robert T. Hill Middle School staff and students recognized their Board of Trustee, Dan Micciche, at an activity in the school library on Friday, Jan. 29. Students delivered speeches on the qualities of a leader and how Micciche exemplified those qualities. Two students from the Theatre Acts Class gave monologues representing Micciche’ s past and future. Students also described how the programs at Hill were preparing them to be the great leaders of tomorrow. Greiner Exploratory Arts Academy that proposes an innovative way to help end credit card fraud is in the running to win a nationwide contest and $2,500 for them and their school. Micaiah Davis’, Rodolfo Manriquez’, Lion Roberson’s business idea—the Iris of the Eye Scan—is one of the top three finalists in the World Series of Innovation contest sponsored by the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship and Mastercard. Gaylord Robert Atkinson, a 93-year-old World War II veteran and Purple Heart recipient, recently shared his war stories with a classroom full of Leadership Cadet Corp students at Thomas C. Serving up one meal to a Dallas Independent School District student could mean the difference in a child eating or going hungry that day. That’s why Dallas ISD’s Food and Child Nutrition Services (FCNS) department takes all things food seriously. It’s also the reason they were recently recognized by Children at Risk, an education advocacy group, for their approach on child nutrition. Trustees approved the adoption of six new student achievement goals that Superintendent Michael Hinojosa says will be the catalyst that drives the district forward. Trustees and Hinojosa developed the proposed achievement goals after reviewing district results and holding multiple workshops. Hinojosa said most of the proposed goals have key performance indicators. The goals are: Goal 1: All students will exhibit Satisfactory or above performance on State assessments. Students below Satisfactory performance will demonstrate more than one year of academic growth; Goal 2: Dallas ISD schools will be the primary choice for families in the district; Goal 3: The achievement gap…
All elementary schools are now required to offer daily recess for students in preK–fifth grade following a policy change approved by trustees last week. The policy change requires elementary schools for the rest of the school year to offer at least 20 minutes of daily recess for all students. Starting next school year, elementary schools will be required to offer at least 30 minutes of daily recess. Trustee Dan Micciche, who proposed the policy change, said during a December board briefing that research shows the positive benefits of recess for young students.
