North Texas Ford Dealers and Ford Motor Company Fund announced more than $400,000 in Ford Driving Dreams scholarships for seniors in high schools across North Texas interested in pursuing education in science, technology, engineering and math. The $2,000 a piece scholarships will be awarded to qualifying students graduating in 2016 and planning to attend an accredited two-year or four-year college or university over the period for which the scholarship is requested. The application deadline is March 14. Qualifying scholarship applicants must submit a “What Drives Your Dream?” essay. The scholarships are part of Ford’s overall education efforts in North Texas.…
Dallas ISD’s Office of Transformation and Innovation today announced plans for two new Choice Schools. Martin Weiss Elementary School, located in southern Dallas, plans to launch as an Innovation School with a Leadership Model beginning in August 2016. Innovation Schools are existing neighborhood schools that re‐purpose the existing campus into a new, schoolwide academic model. They stay in their existing facilities with current staff and continue to enroll students from their traditional attendance zones without admissions requirements, maintaining their neighborhood identities. With all juniors taking the SAT tomorrow as part of SAT School Day, the Dallas ISD Postsecondary Success Department has the following tips for those students: Get a good night sleep Eat a good breakfast Show up to school early, if possible Bring snacks, since there is not a break for lunch The SAT School Day provides free test registration to the juniors. Also, a student can send up to four free official SAT score reports to the colleges of their choice. SAT School Day is a way to eliminate the barriers that come from taking the SAT on a Saturday.

Pennies can really add up, especially if they come from the heart. The 22 Dallas ISD schools that participated in this year’s Common Cents “Pennies from the Heart” campaign know that’s true, too. Collectively, the students raised nearly $27,000 in the effort’s 18th year, pushing the grand total to $800,000 over the life of the program. On Wednesday, Feb. 24, students presented ceremonial checks to the 23 nonprofit organizations they selected to receive the donations. As part of the Intensive Schools Network, Raúl Quintanilla, Sr. Middle School receives additional campus resources that it puts to great use. The school has multiple community partnerships that help students, teachers and parents. For example, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) President Domingo Garcia has donated incentives, including tablets to sixth-graders, to students who achieved academic excellence. Meanwhile, the Sylvan Learning Center provides foundational math skills to students, and Frost Bank provides financial literacy workshops to parents.
