A Dallas ISD teacher is among the top 10 finalists in one of the most prestigious national teacher recognition programs in the country. Eric Hale, a third-grade Math and Science teacher at David G. Burnet Elementary, is one of only 10 teachers nationwide who have been named finalists for the 2016 Fishman Prize for Superlative Classroom Practice, a $25,000 award recognizing the nation’s most effective teachers working in high-need public schools. “Game changer” were the words of the day during a discussion with the Dallas County Community College District Board of Trustees about Dallas ISD’s plan to open eight new district collegiate academies next fall. More than 6,600 parents registered their children for pre-K in Dallas ISD last week as part of Pre-K Registration Week. Kristine Delgado, Dallas ISD Early Childhood Manager, said it was a great first week to kick off the pre-K registration enrollment period. For 25 years, the volunteer service organization Junior League of Dallas has opened doors to scores of learning experiences for Dallas ISD students by funding teachers’ proposals for creative educational projects. Since 1992, the group has invested $1.25 million in such opportunities for students through its Grants for Innovative Teaching (GFIT) Program. More than 100 Dallas ISD students had up to 60 different items for lunch on April 7 – one bite at a time. Participants at the Food & Child Nutrition Services “Food Festival” were charged with tasting the items and rating them. The students – from L.G. Pinkston High School, Zan Holmes Jr. Middle School, Arcadia Park Elementary and Robert E. Lee Elementary – convened at 3015 at Trinity Groves for the tasting. Twenty-five vendors served items such as barbecue, pizza, steak burgers, Asian-inspired chicken and waffle sandwiches.
